I haven't felt much like blogging lately. Mostly because I have been studying. I finished my last exam on Tuesday and tomorrow we start our Trial Techniques program which is every day for the next 7 days from 9-5, yay. I mean, come on, starting it on a Saturday right after we've finished exams? Seems just a wee bit sadistic to me. Ah well, might as well get used to it, right?
On a lighter note, I am really excited to be starting my new job in about a week. I will be in Dallas for the summer and then in July I will leave for India and Pakistan!!!! I am really excited about this, but also apprehensive. Plus I have not bought my tickets or gotten my visas yet. Did I mention that I am the best procrastinator? So break it out guys. Anyone who has traveled to India and Pakistan give me the scoop. What is one thing that you wish someone had told you before you went? Any sage words of wisdom or advice I would appreciate greatly. Especially because now it looks like I will be there for almost 2 months. Looking forward to hearing what you all have to say.

Hey, I am from India, drop me an email if you like.
ReplyDeleteaw man, i thought since school was over soon i'd finally see you! ugh...well fine. ;-)
ReplyDeleteIn Pakistan, I would cover my head..simply for the fact thatit would be respecting that culture..I don't know if you do or not, but I would and do while I am there. Bring Imodium ha ha and load up on medications. Bring earplugs for when you shower to keep yourself from getting an ear infection...I can probably think of more, but these are things I had problems with while there
ReplyDeleteHey, what are you going to be doing there? Are you going with your hubby or for school? I looked thru ur archives but couldn't find anything about it....so tell me...I"m intrigued!
ReplyDeletethat's a long time!!!! two months, wow. I only went when I was 8 so memories are vague. I do know my brother went recently and he said to always drink bottled water (duh), and stick with the natives.
ReplyDeleteTrial Techniques, I heard from a emory law clerk at the aclu about that (Jordana?)... sounds brutal :(
I haven't been to Pakistan or India but from my experience in Yemen I agree with the Immodium and only drinking bottled water. I would also avoid eating anything that isn't hot. Skip the salads and fruits or vegetables that are raw and have been washed/rinsed in water that hasn't been boiled first.
ReplyDeleteDusty- Thanks for the offer!
ReplyDeleteWayfarer- I know, it seems like I haven't seen you in forever :(.
Sobia- Thanks for the tips! I never heard about the ear plug thing before, good to know! I am going to India for a wedding and then meeting M in Karachi afterwards. He is not going to the wedding because he doesn't want to go through all the hassle that Indias put Pakistanis through in getting a visa.
Aisha- I know, I don't know if we will really go that long, I am wondering if I will be able to make it! I went to Europe for 1 month and got really home sick for "American" stuff. Trial Techniques is brutal!! It's only been two days and I'm dying.
Surviving- Thanks for the tips about fruits/vegetables. I would never have realized that about them being washed in dirty water, but of course it makes perfect sense.
I learned the hard way. I keep getting sick and realized it was usually after eating salad or drinking Vimto, which is a drink syrup that they mix with water, I'm sure they must have been using the water from the tap.
ReplyDeleteI hope you have a great trip!!! Take lots of pics for us!!!:)
ReplyDeletetake some cipro with you, just in case. better to not use it, but always good to have it with you. be careful of food at large gatherings, it's usually not as safe (i.e. the wedding). definitely stay away from the ghee bhat (ghee rice)... I always got sick. umm.. if i think of other stuff, i'll right again.
ReplyDeleteHello. My name is Emily Monroy, and I saw your site when I was looking up information about your friend Melody Moezzi. She is a contributor to the magazine I co-edit, Urban Mozaik (www.multiculturalmagazine.com). I find your writing interesting. Being, as you write, an American-born convert to Islam and married to a Pakistani, would you be interested in contributing to our magazine? I will warn you upfront that we cannot pay our contributors, but we would get your name in print and provide links to any sites you wish. You can contact me at msemilia68@yahoo.ca.
ReplyDeleteThank you,
Emily
